October 2022 Newsletter

Hello, Shaker Figure Skating Club members and families,
Spooky season is underway and the holiday season will be here before we know it. Good thing skating season is already in full swing with a variety of activities as well as events both in Shaker and beyond. It’s been great seeing skaters learning new skills and making friends on our club sessions. On that note, we have 11 home club skaters competing in the Center Ice Spooktacular in North Canton on October 21-23 and we look forward to cheering them on!

Sincerely,
Angie Robinson, SFSC President

November 14th Virtual Test Session Information
We are offering a VIRTUAL test session on November 14th. Deadline for video submission is 6pm on November 11th.
Test registration is now available on Entryeeze: https://comp.entryeeze.com/Membership/Welcome.aspx?cid=219

Instructions and forms are available on www.shakerfsc.org/testing. Testers will be responsible for organizing their own videographer, ice times, forms and proctor. They will also be responsible for uploading their own video and forms to a shareable link. There will be no refund of testing fees for missing video submission deadline or for the video being rejected due to not meeting standards. Videos will be rejected if there are 8 or more skaters on the ice during filming.

We are offering private ice filming time on Tuesday November 8th (Election Day) from 9:45-11:45am. This ice is available to home club and associate club members, with priority to home club members since space is limited. Price is $12 per test. If you are interested in using this ice time once registered for test, payment can be made through your Ice+ account. Each skater will be given the opportunity to film once and, if time allows, one additional attempt.

Please work with your coaches to determine if virtual testing is right for your skater. For more information please contact SFSC Test Chairs, Erin Sklarek, Jennifer Gourley, and Patricia Tovanche at shakerfsctesting@gmail.com.

SFSC Is Now on Instagram! Share Your Photos!

SFSC has just launched an Instagram account (ShakerFigureSkatingClub) which we will use to showcase SFSC and to celebrate the accomplishments of our athletes. Feel free to find us and follow along! We now offer both Instagram and Facebook. We want to encourage club members to please take pictures of their skaters to commemorate passing of tests, placing in events, and other accomplishments. The Club loves to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our skaters and will gladly post congratulations on our social media accounts. Club members can send pictures to the SFSC PR Chair at this email address (ShakerFSCpr@gmail.com).

Shaker Friday Night DJ Skates (starts on October 28th)

Friday Night DJ Skates (formerly known as “Friday Night Skate” for those of us who grew up around these parts in the 1980s) is back at Thornton Park! And just in time for Halloween! There is a “Costume Skate” at Thornton from 7:45-9:45pm on October 28 with Rock the House providing the musical entertainment. This is run by Shaker Recreation so just pay at the door. Other skate nights are on November 4, 11, 18, and Dec 16.

SFSC Info Session Volunteers Needed at LTS

The SFSC is continuing its efforts to increase awareness of the Club at the Thornton Learn to Skate (LTS) sessions.  At each final LTS class, SFSC volunteers will host a table to answer questions and talk to LTS parents about the next steps for their skaters. Our next session will be November 15-19.

The goal is to educate more families skating at Thornton about SFSC and skating next steps.  Not only will this bring more awareness of the club, but also add to the pipeline of Club and Bridge Program skaters. If interested in helping, please contact Amy Karfeld at abkarfeld@yahoo.com or (773) 339-9758.

Announcing the CWRU Spartan Classic (10/28-10/30)

Not often do you see college-level skating in the Cleveland area. But our friends at the CWRU Figure Skating Club are hosting its first ever Spartan Classic, an intercollegiate competition at Pavilion Skating Club in Cleveland Heights on October 28-30. Come out and support our local collegiate athletes! And, of course, any help is appreciated:

December 8 Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer Scott Hamilton Fundraiser

Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer™ is 1984 Olympic gold medalist and Ohio’s own Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation’s signature fundraising program. It’s a peer-to-peer fundraiser, so people register for $35 and then ask their friends and family to donate. It will conclude with an Ice Show at Cleveland Public Square on December 8th from 6-8pm, with Scott as Emcee!

The net proceeds from the event will equally benefit CARES cancer research (funding a study in pediatric glioblastoma brain tumors) and the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute. Aside from knowing we’ve made a difference together, getting Scott back to Cleveland, and elevating our sport – participants can earn items from our recognition program like water bottles and cooler bags as a small token of thanks, plus every city has its own unique set of incentives. In Cleveland, they are as follows:

  • Anyone who raises $1,000 or more is invited to our Meet and Greet with Scott and our other star performers, to be announced
  • The Top 8 fundraisers will be invited to perform solos in our ice show
  • The Top 15 fundraisers will get to be a part of a special group number in the show
  • The Top 3 Synchro or TOI teams will be invited to perform

The fundraising deadline to perform is November 18th so don’t wait to get started!
